GOD

says that we are to

FLEE from IDOLATRY.

WHEREFORE, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry1 John 5:21

TURN ye not unto idols,

nor make to yourselves molten gods:

I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:4

YE shall make you no idols nor graven image,

neither rear you up a standing image,

neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land,

to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 26:1

AND I will destroy your high places,

and cut down your images,

and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols,

and my soul shall abhor you. Leviticus 26:30

FOR all the gods of the people are idols:

but the LORD made the heavens. 1 Chronicles 16:26

For all the gods of the nations are idols:

but the LORD made the heavens. Psalm 96:5

AND they served their idols:

which were a snare unto them.  Psalm 106:36

THEIR land also is full of idols;

they worship the work of their own hands,

that which their own fingers have made: Isaiah 2:8

THEY shall be ashamed,

and also confounded, all of them:

they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols.  Isaiah 45:16

THEN said I unto them,

Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes,

and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt:

I am the LORD your God. Ezekiel 20:7

AND what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?

for ye are the temple of the living God;

as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them;

and I will be their God,

and they shall be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:16

BUT were mingled among the heathen,

and learned their works.

And they served their idols:

which were a snare unto them.

Yea,

they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils.  Psalm 106:35-37

THEY sacrificed to demons, who were not God,

to gods whom they did not know,

new ones who came lately.

Your fathers had not dreaded them.  Deuteronomy 32:17

IDOLATRY –  WHAT IS IT?

It is the worship, reverence, high praise, and adoration

of idols –

all that God calls and idol.

Have a look at the first two syllables in the word idolatry.

“I” plus “dol”.  I – dol.

Physical speaking, are there any basic similarities between a doll and an idol?

Most dolls have eyes, at least eyes.  Many will have ears, nose, mouth, shoulders, torso, hands, feet, etc.

Eyes  that cannot see?  Ears that cannot hear?  Noses that cannot smell?  Mouths that cannot speak.  Feet that cannot walk?

Sounds exactly as God described here:

For Jehovah will judge His people; and He will have pity on His servants.
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands;
they have mouths, but they say nothing; they have eyes, but they see nothing;
they have ears, but they hear nothing; yea, there is no breath in their mouths.
Those who make them are like them, everyone who is trusting in them. Psa 135:15- 18

Many man made ‘idols’ will have some recognizable form of a creature, whether man or beast or bird, or angel, or demon.  These forms also usually have eyes, and may have the other details too.

Statues; another word for ‘images‘: “from Latin statua “image, statue, monumental figure, representation in metal,” properly “that which is set up,” back-formation from statuere “to cause to stand, set up,” from status “a standing, position”.  (Online Entymology Dictionary)

They have no life.  They are inanimate – without life.

They have to be carried around, or, they have some other kind of external power, such as battery power….and they are adored, revered, valued very highly, even spoken to, and treated with dignity…??!!

The Collins dictionary says an idol is:  “1. a material object, esp. a carved image, that is worshipped …3.  a person who is revered, admired or highly praised…from Late Latin idolum, from Latin image, from Greek eidolon, from eidos, shape, form.”

Especially a  carved image (but not necessarily carved)

Look at the nouns listed : OBJECT, IMAGE, SHAPE,  FORM

Look at the verbs listed : WORSHIPPED, REVERED, ADMIRED, HIGHLY PRAISED.

………………

DOLL…a small model or dummy  of a human being used as a toy.

A dressed up small image of a human form. To make them more appealing…? more special…? more adorable…? more highly praised…?

………………..

DUMMY…a figure representing the human form.

Why is a ‘dummy’ called a dummy?  Is there possibly a connection between the word dummy and dumb?  Mute?

The ‘doll’ industry has become a mega dollar business.  Dolls are man made images, of various materials, and usually have a form of some living creature, animal, bird, human,  angel, devil.  And with the advent of comics, cinema and TV, etc, the ‘image’ industry has produced and saturated the family home.

‘Images’ in the home.  Funloving, harmless images…toys, for all ages, and all tastes.  Images that can be empowered with imagination and battery, or electrical power of some sort.  Idols that  can ‘talk’ or squawk.  Idols that you can doll up.  Idols that do take a prominent place in the home.

MY, my, haven’t we come a long way since the dark ages?  Never mind what God says.  I don’t WORSHIP my statues, my dolls, my toy images.  They’re not idols.

These things get a hold of our affections, our attention, our praise and honour, and money…?   AND THEY ARE NOT IDOLS…??

………….

What the eye  – the “I”, focuses on can and easily becomes a god, an idol.  It becomes a thing of reverence, admiration, high praise, (devotion – another similar word).  Oh perhaps we don’t bow down like ‘pagans’ do and dance around them performing all kinds of nasty rituals.  But we do devote time, energy, money, and affection and attention to them….  ON a lifeless vain thing…….?

What does the Holy Spirit say in Hebrews 12:2?  “LOOKING UNTO JESUS…”

And this does not mean looking unto a so-called picture of Jesus, or a so-called image of Jesus.   God cannot be represented by human craftwork.  Jesus is God.  It is very foolish for men to try and put some idea of the imaginations onto paper, or canvas, etc., and say “that is Jesus.”

It is NOT Jesus.

Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father in Heaven.  And He gave no one the right to try and portray His image onto some manmade medium.  In fact He spoke through Paul and said:

“For in Him we live and move and exist, as also some of the poets among you have said, For we are also His offspring.
Then being offspring of God, we ought not to suppose that the Godhead is like gold or silver or stone, engraved by art and the imagination of man.
Truly, then, God overlooking the times of ignorance, now strictly commands all men everywhere to repent,
because He set a day in which “He is going to judge the habitable world in righteousness,” by a Man whom He appointed; having given proof to all by raising Him from the dead.
Acts 17:28-31.
“ought not’ means “have no right”

We humans love the sense world.  If there is something to see, we want to see it, and if we can’t see it we will imagine it, and then, we will transfer that image in our brain onto some kind of material.  And we will stand back and go – Ooooh, ahhhh.

God knows that that is what we do and are good at.  And He has forbidden it.  We must repent and stop producing idols, especially idols of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

John the baptizer was told that on whomever he was to see the Holy Spirit descend upon and abide on, that person would be the one who would baptize in the Holy Spirit.  John saw the Holy Spirit come down as a dove, not an actual bird, but in the same form of a dove.

And what do we have today?  Christians all over the place painting an image of a white ‘dove’ on some kind of material and say that it is or represents the Holy Spirit. Many are well meaning and want to somehow honour the Holy Spirit.  But God doesn’t live on a canvas or a piece of paper,. or in an image of metal, plastic or wood, or clay formed by the hand of man.

He lives in breathing vessels of clay which He has made and who have given themselves over to Jesus Christ, and are washed in the Blood of the Lamb.    God does not live in bricks and mortar, nor in paint and picture.  God wants to live in man.

A picture or image is not God.  How can some finite inanimate thing represent the infinite living God? – Unless God says it is okay.  Otherwise it is impossible?

Where does God give permission for people to represent Him in a man made object?

Where does God say NOT to do so?  – Acts 17:29, 30.  Below I have included other passages forbidding us to make images of God;- remember – GOD dwells in Heaven.

Why are we to LOOK unto Jesus?

Because Jesus Christ is the SON OF GOD, and is GOD.  He ALONE should be worshipped, adored, highly praised, bowed to among men.  If we truly honour the Son of God then we will automatically honour His Father, The Lord of Heaven and earth.

Why is God so against idolatry?

The words idolatry, idol, idols, images, and image in connection with this matter, occur in Scripture well over two hundred times.

God is emphasing this matter.  Because it will lead us straight into HELL.  And that is not what He wants for us.  He did not make Hell for mankind.  God did not make HELL for mankind.  He made that place for the devil and his angels – Matthew 25:41.

Galatians 5 tells us that those who practice idolatry (the worship – reverence, admiration, high praise of idols), will be excluded from the Kingdom of God….Heaven, EVEN IF THEY ARE ‘BELIEVERS’.  Paul is warning the flock of God – DON’T GO THAT WAY!!

God tells us that the gods idols that men revere are void of life and cannot help the living.  He tells us that there are demons behind (in) such things.  Demons who are sent to steal our affection our time, our energy our devotion our attention and get it off Jesus Christ who alone can help mankind – old and young, and put it on useless unprofitable lifeless things.  And “they changed their Glory into the image of an ox eating grass”. Psalm 106:20

In Deuteronomy 32 and Psalm 106 we are told that worthless idols have demons connected to them.  They sacrificed to demons Deut 32:17.

Isaiah is told to say that the land is FULL of idols.

Today our cities are full of idols.  People worshipping living persons and dead persons, and inanimate objects.

Today our homes are filled with idols.   I had an idol in my lounge room; the TV.  God was speaking to me about for years.  When I finally woke up by His mercy and grace, I got rid of it once and for all.

We serve these things by dressing them up, by looking after them.  Giiving hem a prominanet place in our homes.  A slave will look after his master.  Even to dress them which is what used to happen to kings and queens of old. That is slavish activity.

Why does God go to great pains to tell mankind NOT to make such things? In Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy God through Moses specifically repeats the prohibition of making idols, images a number of times and expresses it in a number of ways.

Of course we are not to ‘worship‘ images.

But we are also NOT TO MAKE such things.

But we have and we do.

God says

Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Deu 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
Deu 4:17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
Deu 4:18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Deu 4:23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God0 hath forbidden thee.
Deu 4:25 When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image,or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:
Deu 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

That’s five witnesses that say do NOT MAKE.  God has warned us well ahead of time.  We must choose  to obey or disobey Him.  That choice of ours will determine where we will be after we leave this mortal life.  We cannot take our sin into Heaven. Idolaters will not enter into Heaven.

We are told in Hebrews 12 that we are to lay aside every sin and every weight that so easily besets us.  Why?  Because we must let it go in order to enter into God’s Kingdom by the narrow way – Jesus Christ.

All the idols and images and statues that mankind has seen to this day are all precursors  to the final image.  The image of the final antichrist.  The false prophet will order an image of hte antichrist to be made and that image will have a demon live in it.  And that image will be able to cause all those who do not worship the antichrist and do not take his name, the number of his name,  or his mark to be killed.  Bow or burn.  Do not take that mark.  Do not take that name.  Do not take that number.

That idolatrous action will be irreversible,

and it will condemn every guilty person to Hell.

Flee Idolatry.

And flee to Jesus.

Never let Him go.

“For other uses, see Doll (disambiguation) and Dolls (disambiguation).

(you can see an image of a bisque doll on that site.)

European bisque doll from the 1870s

A doll is a model of a human being, often used as a toy for children. Dolls have traditionally been used in magic and religious rituals throughout the world, and traditional dolls made of materials such as clay and wood are found in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. The earliest documented dolls go back to the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Dolls being used as toys was documented in Greece around 100 AD. They have been made as crude, rudimentary playthings as well as elaborate art. Modern doll manufacturing has its roots in Germany going back to the 15th century. With industrialization and new materials such as porcelain and plastic, dolls were increasingly mass-produced. During the 20th century dolls became increasingly popular as collectibles.”

All the ancient cultures  were rooted in spiritual darkness,  ignorant and void of God.  This is not to say that God did not reveal some truth to them in a generation, like as in the case of Nineveh when God sent Jonah to preach and warn them of impending Judgement.
